A Country Boy in the Big City
I grew up in a small town in Eastern Kentucky. It was a great community where everyone knew everyone else and I learned a lot of my values there. There is still a big part of Kentucky in me and on the second Saturday in May, you will always find me cheering on the horses during the Kentucky Derby.
But the big city called. I first ventured out to Cincinnati for a few years and eventually moved to New York in 1997. The big apple is now my home and I love it.
When I first moved here I spent several years working on Wall Street – so I am very familiar with the high pressure world of corporate America. It’s brutal – but exciting.
Having an entrepreneurial spirit, I started my own therapy practice. But having the type of mind that thinks outside the box – I did it a little differently. I founded Walk and Talk Therapy.
Instead of meeting in an office, I meet my clients in Central Park and we walk for the session. It’s unusual but very effective. Before I knew it, I received media attention from The Wall Street Journal, Good Morning America, The New York Times and the Times of London – all wanting to talk about this new approach to counseling. This practice continues today and certainly keeps me in shape.
When working with couples, I also wanted to have a unique approach, therefore I started working with couples all over the world via Skype. I found it to be incredibly convenient for people who live in isolated areas, couples who live apart and for people who are just too busy to commute to a therapist’s office and want the comfort of sitting on their couch or in their office during the session.
I’ve been a therapist for coming up on 25 years. My practice is pretty evenly split between individuals and couples and I am passionate about working with people to improve their lives as quickly and effectively as possible.
What about outside the office?
My second passion is theater. I guess I’ve always loved stories – either hearing them or telling them. So when I’m not being a therapist, I’m running a small professional theater company with my wife. Yes – I know the difficulty of working with your spouse!
But three times a year, we get to create a little magic by staging a play that speaks to us and our audiences. I love working with artists and it’s a chance to be a part of something bigger than ourselves and give back to the community.
So I’m a therapist with small town roots that now lives in New York City. I have experience on Wall Street and I’m an entrepreneur who runs his own small business and I’m a producer of a theater company. Kind of a mixed bag, but it does seem to work.
